Contrary to a lot of expectations, a new research reports suggests that initial iPhone buyers will include a lot of young folk with no particular connection to Apple.

Solutions Research Group found that, out of the survey respondents who said they would "definitely" consider plunking down $500 on an iPhone, 48 percent didn't own an iPod. Likely buyers were apt to be T-Mobile subscribers, too, with exclusive iPhone carrier AT&T ranking second.

Good new all around for Apple and AT&T, who would rather suck in new customers than upsell current ones.
