TORONTO -- More than two-thirds of Canadian
homes now have a DVD player, representing the biggest driver of home
viewing here, Solutions Research Group said Monday. Toronto-based Solutions
Research, in its latest home entertainment survey, said DVD hardware
penetration rose to 68% of domestic households this year, a 20% increase
from 48% in 2003. And 83% of Canadian homes with at least one person
12-29 years old owned a DVD player, up from 62% of homes in 2003. "DVDs
will be the leading entertainment retail gift this year," the report
predicted. Solutions Research said Canadians are spending more on DVDs
than they are on books, music CDs or video games. Wal-Mart is the leading
Canadian retailer of DVDs, enjoying a 31% market share, up from a 26%
share in 2003, the report said. Other key retailers include Future Shop/Best
Buy, HMV, Blockbuster and Zellers. |
