Everything digital is flying off the shelves. More than 80% of Canadians say they want a digital gadget leading up to the Christmas season, according to a survey by Solution’s Research Group. The survey says consumers are “optimistic and confident” which suggests a strong Christmas period. “TV market growing” “Sales are up and everyone wants the latest technology,” said Umair Kamal, manager of the Future Shop at Yonge and Dundas Sts. “The TV market is growing, a lot of laptops are moving because of back-to-school and iPods are very hot.” The top three wish list items overall were flat screen high definition TVs on the wish list at 30% - followed by a digital camera at 21% and a new laptop at 20%. Other top items include a new cell phone, a new desktop PC, a digital video camera, Nintendo Wii, Apple iPhone, a Blu-ray or HD DVD unit and a GPS Navigation unit for the car. Apple’s iPhone is not available in Canada and yet it was ranked as a wish list item among teens and young adults. “Everything is technology-oriented and the way school is going, you need iPod computers,” said Mike Granholm, a graphic artist student at Ryerson University. “Digital is so big and everyone is interested in cameras.” Solutions also said that based on popularity and shrinking prices, HD sets will be in one out of three homes by spring 2008, up from only 24% today. |
